For years now my husband and I have enjoyed red wine. We started drinking red because my husband's sticky heart valve caused us to worry about heart disease. The antioxidants are supposed to help prevent heart disease, and it seemed like a good excuse to drink red wine. We honed our tastes to pinot noir and malbec. These became our favorite flavors, especially when I found them cheap at Aldi. One added bonus was that they come with actual corks. My husband swore never to drink another screw cap wine after a bad bottle we got from New Zealand.
Recently, however, we went to a dinner party at a friend's house. The friends were kind enough to text the menu to us before we arrived. After a Google search I found that chicken and rosemary potatoes go better with chardonnay. Who knew?
To my surprise, I like chardonnay both "oaked" and "unoaked," (which refers to whether or not it's been aged in a barrel). I don't know if it has the health benefits of red wine, but I'm beginning to think that white is a good summer wine and I'll reserve the red for fall and winter. The light, fruitiness of the white goes better with Texas heat - especially since white wine is served chilled.
I don't know why it took me so many years to try white wine, but I'm glad we did. Maybe I'll be really bold and try something else new . . . next year.
